11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION.

11.1 SHORT TERM EFFECTS.

There are no known health effects from exposure to man made mineral fibre products in modern conditions of manufacture and installation. Manufacturing methods incorporate the use of a binder which is cured during the process and inhibits the migration of fibres, some fibres migration may be expected during handling, but release of fibres after installation is known to be negligible.

On the basis of the evidence of exposure over 30 years the International Agency for Research into Cancer has classified man-made fibre as "possibly carcinogenic", this is a classification applied to substance whose carcinogenic effects in humans are non-proven. Mineral fibres are classified in this category along with many others, saccharin, carbon tetrachloride, hardwood fibres and carbon black extracts.

In light of the current evidence it is prudent to minimise exposure to dust wherever possible using the recommendations given in this document.
