11.2 CHRONIC EFFECTS
Man-made fibres can cause irritation of the skin and the eyes and excessively
dusty conditions may
cause irritation to the upper respiratory tract. They contain fibres which
can be breathed into the lungs.
The committee on the carcinogenicity (COC) of the department of health
has concluded that the
MMMFs considered in this review (i.e. rock/slag wool and glass wool) Should
not be classified for carcinogenicity under the criteria laid out in the
dangerous substances directive (67/548/EEC),
in view of the negative results in inhalation studies in animals.
